  Third Anniversary & Award Show - 2005

Malayalee Association of Maryland (MAM)-USA celebrated its Third Anniversary & AWARD SHOW-2005 on December 3rd 2005 at the Banquet Hall of the Bombay Grill Restaurant in Columbia-Maryland-USA.

Chief Guest of the function was His Excellency Hon. Ambassador T.P. Sreenivasan. Another important guest was Hon. Dr M.V. Pillai and other guests including Sunny Wycliffe, Parthasarathi Pillai and Ann Pillai.

Prominent writers from various parts of USA attended the function. They are Pazhayannur Sasikumar, Abdul Punnayurkulam, Murali J. Nair, Elcy Yohannan Sankarathil, and Rev: Yohannan Sankarathil Cor. Episcopa, Sreelal Vasudevan and John Attumali.

Christy Rajan and Anita Pothen were MCs. The program started with a minute of silence for the Late President K.R. Narayanan. John Attumali recited a poem written by Pazhayannur Sasikumar in memory of the late President. Opening devotional song was sung by Christy Rajan

Chairman Thomas Antony gave a warm welcome to all the guests. Chairman gave a special introduction to His Excellency Hon. Ambassador T. P. Sreenivasan. He cited Ambassador Sreenivasan’s multiple achievements in the Foreign Service of India. Mr. Antony pointedly stressed the Ambassadors illustrious Diplomatic experience spanning a period of 37 years from Tokyo in 1969 to Austria in 2004. His Diplomatic career included Japan, Bhutan, Moscow, Burma, Kenya, United Nations (both Vienna and New York), Deputy Ambassador to USA and various specialized UN committees.

Hon. Ambassador gave a very informative speech filled with humor and serious topics like the just signed Indo-US Nuclear Treaty. The speech was so hilarious that the audience broke into laughter several times. They listened to him with rapt attention. The speech was interrupted by wild applause several times.

Special award for Community Service presented to Tony Chemmanoor

Special Award Presentation:
A special award for Community Service was presented to Tony Chemmanoor-Owner of the Bombay Grill Group-by Ambassador Sreenivasan. The AWARD cited his regular support of various charities and community causes.

Cultural & Scholastic AWARD presentation:
Hon. Ambassador presented the awards to the following winners:

Anitha Pothen conducted the Spelling Bee contest and Christy Fernandez and Prasad Nair conducted other cultural competition.

Literary AWARD Presentation:
The Panel for the 2005 Literary Competition consisted of:

2) Abdul Punayurkulam
    Secretary of Literary Association of North America (LANA)- Michigan
3) Raju Mylapra of Malayalam Pathram-New York

3) Antony C Davis-Trissur, Kerala, India - Malayalam Short Story
    (He is Mathrubhumi News reporter for Trissur Bureau)
4) Preethy Cherian-Trivandrum, Kerala, India- English Poem

Both Pazhayannur Sasikumar and Elcy Yohannan Sankarathil received the AWARD in person from the Hon. Ambassador.

Mr. Murali J. Nair-the Literary Panel Chairman- accepted the AWARD on behalf of Antony C Davis and the AWARD for Preethy Cherian was accepted by Abdul Punayurkulam from the Hon. Ambassador.

Very Distinguished Diplomat AWARD Presentation
Dr. M.V. Pillai presented the “Very Distinguished Diplomat” AWARD to Hon. Ambassador His Excellency T.P. Sreenivasan. The AWARD was presented on behalf of the U.S. Malayalee Community.

Poem Citations, Speeches and Other entertainments

Dr. M.V Pillai thrilled the crowd with a very hilarious speech. Rev. Yohannan Sankarathil Cor. Episcopa addressed the crowd with an informative speech.

Pazayannur Sasikumar and Murali J Nair made speeches and recited poems. Abdul Punayurkulam also addressed the crowd & recited a poem. Elcy Sankarathil recited two poems on K.R. Narayanan. One when he became the President and another one after his death on November 9, 2005. Sreelal Vasudevan-one of the MAM Literary Award recipients of 2004 -made a speech & recited a poem.

President Joseph offered the vote of thanks with an inspiring speech. He especially thanked the Ambassador for taking the time away from his busy schedule to come all the way from India just to attend the MAM function.

After the National Anthem there was variety entertainment during the Banquet. It was led by Christy Fernandez. The performers included Christy Rajan, Prasad Kurup and Lawrence. Blesson Lukose as the incharge of set up did an excellent job.
