  Summer Festival 2003

Malayalee Association of Maryland celebrated Indian Independence Day on August 23, 2003 at the Banquet Hall of the Bombay Grill Restaurant in Towson, Maryland. Our Chief Guest was the world renowned Dr. M.V Pillai. Other Guests included Dr. Jyothi Kesavadev(son of the Malayalam legend P. Kesavadev) and Mr. Sunny Wycliffe.

The Masters of Ceremony for the program were Smitha Jose and Tina Antony. The program started with the lighting of the lamp and opening prayer song by Megha Jacob.

Chairman Mr. Thomas P. Antony introduced the guests and reiterated the goal of the association in promoting the cultural, literary and artistic talents in the community.

The web site of MAM(www.mam-usa.org) was inaugurated by Dr. M.V Pillai. He presented an AWARD to Mr. Prasad Nair for the wonderful job he did in creating the web site.

Dr. M.V Pillai lauded the goals of MAM and praised them for the courage in forming a new association with a different focus. He enlightened the crowd with his humor, wit and knowledgeable presentation. The audience was held to raft attention.

Dr. Jyothi Kesavadev spoke of his illustrious father P. Kesavadev and stressed the need to promote Malayalam language. His interactive session with the audience was very lively and informative.

Mr. Sunny Wycliffe spoke of the Special project-One dollar for language (Bhashakku oru dollar)- initiated by Dr. M V. pillai to promote Malayalam Language. The audience contributed generously to the fund.

Dr. M. V Pillai distributed Award (including CASH) to winners of the various art and cultural programs.

The Chief Judge for the competition was Christy Fernandez. Other Judges were Julie and Loulie Kurikose. Chairman Mr. Thomas P. Antony introduced the sponsors of the award.

President Mr. Joseph Pothen spoke of the upcoming events. The programs included Rambling (speed talk) by Pearli Babu, speech by Sebastian Kurian, dances by Julie & Loulie Kuriakose, Melani Mavungal, songs by Megah Jacob, Prasad Nair, Ramachandran Pillai, Antony Abraham and a special song by KCS President Prasad Kurup. John Attumalil recited a poem.

President Joseph Pothen offered the vote of thanks. Indian National Anthem was rendered by Antony Abraham & Rajan Mathai. Anita Pothen led American National Anthem.

The audience was given a chance to win cash awards by completing a Quiz (questionnaire) on India. There was lot of entries. Winners will be awarded at the winter gathering on December 13, 2003.

The program ended with a gala banquet at 10 PM. Christie Fernandez did a wonderful job as the Special Events Manager and presenting the sound system. Henry P Thomas handled Video production and Joy Panjikaran handled camera. Blesson Lukose, Rajan Mathai, Santhosh Kavanakudy, Kuriakose Nedumpallil and Peter Pereira handled registration and set up.
